Little Miss K turns 2 on Thursday. It’s so hard to believe she has been a part of our family for 2 years already. My husband and I keep looking at her and then each other like, “Who is this kid and what happened to the infant who was just here?!”
Moms, you get that right? It’s like all of a sudden your baby has become a small person with opinions and ideas and complicated emotions. How is it that the time goes by so quickly??
Seriously. I need to know so that I can begin to work on an invention to reverse the process. (You know, using my super-smart inventing skills.)
Birthdays were never a huge deal for me growing up, and my husband was the same way. As parents, we do want to recognize the special day for our kids, taking the time to make them feel important and special. (And cue the snarky remarks about how we should be doing this every day…) But we just aren’t the type to go over the top with birthdays.
Our birthday celebration style is pretty simple. On the actual day-of, we have a special dinner with just our foursome, usually the birthday kid’s favorite followed by cake. Then we have a birthday party for extended family and friends at our house on a Saturday or Sunday.
Now, I’m no birthday party expert. I’ve only actually hosted a total of 4 birthday parties. But with my limited experience, I’m confident that if you have these three essentials, you’re kid’s birthday party will be fabulous.
Three Must-Haves for a FABULOUS Kid’s Birthday Party
1. Kid
The first thing you need is a kid. The qualifications are not set in stone. People seem to believe the age cutoff for kid status is 18. However, I’ve known some 30-somethings who I’d definitely consider kid-like. And a kid is absolutely crucial to a fabulous kid’s birthday party.
2. Birthday
The second thing you need is a birthday. The party does not have to be on the actual date of the kid’s birth. In fact, if we are going to be super-literal here, that might make for a very crowded hospital room and overwhelmed momma. Just find a kid with a birthday and you’re well on your way to having a fabulous kid’s birthday party.
3. Love
The last thing you need is love. Lots and lots of love. You can’t overdo it here. In fact, the more the better because this element is just that important.
Because, let’s be real. You can have the most perfect planned out theme with the cutest and most creative handmade decorations and the funnest, coolest games and activities and have a birthday party that would make any Pinterest addict drool.
But without love, it just isn’t fabulous. It might be fun. It might be pretty. It might make YOU proud. But I promise you this: you CAN have a fabulous birthday party for your kiddo without consulting Pinterest.
